Year

2023

Becoming is a to-do app designed to transform task management from a chore into a smooth, fulfilling journey. Embracing the statement, “Standing true to this statement should be a breeze, not a battle. We’re here to make the journey smoother,” the app was created to help users focus on personal growth through manageable, bite-sized tasks.

Standing true to this statement should be a breeze, not a battle. We're here to make the journey smoother.

Goals
  • User Empowerment: Facilitate goal achievement with an intuitive, easy-to-use interface.

  • Simplicity: Prioritize a clean, minimalist design to prevent users from feeling overwhelmed.

  • Encouragement: Integrate positive reinforcement to motivate users without adding unnecessary complexity.

Design Process

1. Research and Inspiration

We began by examining popular to-do apps and identified pain points users experience with traditional task managers. Overwhelming complexity, feature bloat, and poor user engagement were common issues. Becoming would focus on user satisfaction and simplicity.

2. Defining Key Features

To achieve the project goals, we focused on three core elements:

  • Task Creation Flow: A streamlined task setup with easy categorization.

  • Motivational Reminders: Non-intrusive, personalized nudges to help users stay engaged.

  • Progress Visualization: Visual indicators showing milestones and achievements, allowing users to see their progress without feeling pressure.

3. User Experience (UX) and Wireframes

We started with low-fidelity wireframes focusing on clean, spacious layouts. This approach was chosen to support visual clarity and reduce cognitive load. Each element was considered for its impact on the user’s journey, with feedback loops to ensure intuitive navigation and task completion.

4. User Interface (UI) and Visual Design

Inspired by concepts of calm and focus, we chose a minimal color palette with pastel shades to invoke relaxation. Typography was kept simple and readable, with a primary emphasis on a soothing visual experience. Task cards were designed with ample space to avoid crowding, and icons were subtle but intuitive.

5. Interactivity and Micro-interactions

Micro-interactions played a key role in making the app feel responsive and rewarding. For example, a soft animation when a task is marked complete reinforces accomplishment and encourages users to continue using the app without feeling like they are simply crossing off lists.

Final Product

We launched early access to a small group of people. The end result was an app that feels calm, inviting, and efficient. Users can:

  1. Easily add, categorize, and reorder tasks.

  2. Set personalized reminders.

  3. Track progress with simple visual indicators.

  4. Feedback highlighted how Becoming helps users feel less stressed about their tasks and more in control of their personal goals.

Reflection

Designing Becoming was a journey of staying true to user-centered design. By focusing on simplicity, personalization, and empowerment, we created a to-do app that stands out in its category, aiming to make growth a smooth journey rather than a challenge.
